Church photography

Photography is more than simply taking pictures—it is a way of telling the story of what God is doing in and through His church. Throughout Scripture, God repeatedly calls His people to remember, celebrate, and share His faithfulness with future generations. Church photography helps us do exactly that by capturing moments of worship, baptism, community, service, and life change. These images become visual testimonies that encourage believers, help people feel connected to the church family, and invite others to see the work of God among His people. As photographers, we are not just documenting events; we are serving the mission of the church by faithfully and respectfully highlighting the people, relationships, and stories that reflect God's grace and glory.

Practical Training for Capturing Church Life

Great church photography goes beyond Sunday services—it tells the full story of community, worship, and life within the church. The videos below provide practical guidance from experienced church photographers on how to capture meaningful moments in different environments, from worship in the auditorium to natural interactions in the lobby and beyond. You’ll also find a helpful shot list that gives structure to what you should be looking for during a service or event. Together, these resources will help you develop both the technical skills and the intentional mindset needed to document church life with clarity, consistency, and purpose.

Photography Basics

Great church photography starts with understanding the fundamentals of exposure, light, and composition. These technical skills allow you to confidently operate your camera in challenging environments like dim auditoriums, fast-moving services, and unpredictable lighting conditions. In this section, you’ll learn the core principles of the exposure triangle, white balance, and composition, along with practical guidance for low-light shooting, focus techniques, and choosing the right lenses. The goal is not just technical accuracy, but consistency—so every photographer on the team can capture clear, compelling, and distraction-free images that serve the mission of the church.

Photography Gear

For consistency and quality across our photography team, the church primarily provides a Canon R5 paired with the Canon RF 70–200mm f/2.8 lens. This combination is ideal for church environments, offering excellent low-light performance, fast autofocus, and the flexibility needed to capture both wide emotional moments and tight, intimate expressions from a distance without being distracting.
Most photographers will use this shared setup so that images remain consistent in style and quality across services and events. The 70–200mm focal range also allows you to stay unobtrusive while capturing candid moments, worship, baptisms, and stage activity from a respectful distance.

Some photographers may choose to bring and use their own gear. While this is welcome, it’s important that any personal equipment meets a similar standard of performance, particularly in low-light situations. Full-frame bodies and fast lenses are strongly recommended to ensure image quality aligns with the rest of the team.
Regardless of gear, the goal is the same: use reliable equipment that allows you to focus less on technical limitations and more on capturing meaningful moments that serve the story of the church.
